Pre-Session: GIFT Nifty signals subdued start for Indian markets; Asia-Pacific lower

Indian benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty 50, are expected to open on a weaker note on April 16, as indicated by GIFT Nifty, which was trading around 23,275 earlier this morning.

On April 15, the benchmark indices extended their gains for a second consecutive session, fully recovering the losses incurred since the US President Trump's April 2 tariff announcement. The recovery was driven by hopes of an exemption for cars and auto parts, along with a late-session boost from the forecast of above-average rainfall this year.

Going forward, Indian markets are likely to remain focused on fourth-quarter earnings, tariff-related developments, and key global macroeconomic indicators, as markets globally take a pause from the recent US tariff-driven volatility.

On Tuesday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 76734.89 up by 1577.63 points or by 2.1 % and then NSE Nifty was at 22828.55 up by 429.4 points or by 1.92 %.

On the global front, Asian stocks edged lower and US equity-index futures slid as trade conflicts showed no signs of abating, with Nvidia Corp. saying the US put new restrictions on some chip exports to China.

US stocks ended slightly lower on Tuesday as tariff uncertainty stayed high and shares of consumer and healthcare companies eased, while upbeat results from banks provided some support.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 155.83 points, or 0.38%, to 40,368.96, the S&P 500 lost 9.34 points, or 0.17%, to 5,396.63, and the Nasdaq Composite lost 8.32 points, or 0.05%, to 16,823.17.
