Pre-Session: GIFT Nifty signals higher start for India markets; Nikkei, Hang Seng climb

Indian benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty 50, are expected to open on a positive note on April 8, taking cues from GIFT Nifty, which was trading around 22,658.50 earlier this morning.

The domestic stock market is likely to follow the sentiment of Asian and global peers, with Japan’s Nikkei posting gains of over 5% on Tuesday morning. This optimism comes despite heightened trade tensions, as US President Donald Trump increased pressure on China to reverse retaliatory tariffs on American imports. However, reports suggest that China intends to stand firm against Trump’s measures.

On Monday, the 30-share benchmark index ended at 73137.9 down by -2226.79 points or by -2.95 % and then NSE Nifty was at 22161.6 down by -742.85 points or by -3.24 %.

On the global front, Asian stocks bounced back after the worst day on record, snapping a global slump sparked by concerns that President Donald Trump’s trade war will hurt economic growth.

Most major stock indexes ended a turbulent Monday lower as U.S. President Donald Trump showed no sign of easing up on his global trade war, while US Treasury yields rebounded.

The European Union proposed counter-tariffs on Monday, while Trump threatened to add another 50% duty on U.S. imports from China on Wednesday if it did not withdraw its 34% retaliatory tariffs from last week.

US stocks swung between heavy losses and gains throughout the session as investors digested changing headlines related to tariffs.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 349.26 points, or 0.91%, to 37,965.60; the S&P 500 dropped 11.83 points, or 0.23%, to 5,062.25; and the Nasdaq Composite rose 15.48 points, or 0.10%, to 15,603.26.
