Indian benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty 50, are expected to open on a negative note on April 4, following cues from GIFT Nifty, which was trading around 23,211 earlier this morning.
The domestic market sentiment may be impacted by a global sell-off in the previous session, triggered by U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement on April 2 of sweeping tariffs on most imports into the United States, with some exceptions.
On Thursday, the 30-share benchmark indices ended at 76295.36 down by -322.08 points or by -0.42 % and then NSE Nifty was at 23250.1 down by -82.25 points or by -0.35 %.
On the global front, Asian markets extended declines on Friday, tracking steep losses on Wall Street after U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs rattled global markets. In the Asia Pacific region, Japan's Nikkei was lower by 2.46 per cent, and the Topix was behind by 3.18 per cent. South Korea's Kospi declined 0.29 per cent, while the Kosdaq climbed 0.59 per cent. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 was lower by 1.42 per cent. The Hong Kong and mainland China markets are closed today for the Qingming Festival.
Wall Street benchmarks slumped on Thursday, ending with the largest one-day percentage losses in years, as U.S. President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs ignited fears of an all-out trade war and a global economic recession.
Investors fled from risky assets, seeking the safety of government bonds, after Trump slapped a 10% tariff on most U.S. imports and much higher levies on dozens of other countries.
The S&P 500 lost 275.05 points, or 4.85%, to end at 5,395.92 points, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 1,053.60 points, or 5.99%, to 16,547.45. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1,682.61 points, or 3.98%, to 40,542.71.
