The rupee declined by 8 paise to close at 85.77 (provisional) against the US dollar on Thursday, weighed down by month-end dollar demand from importers and the greenback's rebound against major currencies.
The US dollar gained strength after former US President Donald Trump announced 25% tariffs on automotive imports, set to take effect on April 2.
According to forex dealers, the rupee also faced pressure from liquidity constraints, concerns over reciprocal tariffs, and increased demand for the dollar from importers.
