Coal and Lignite Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) — Coal India Limited (CIL), NLC India Limited (NLCIL), and Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) — are implementing sustainable measures to utilize excess mine water for irrigation, industrial, and domestic use. This initiative reduces reliance on groundwater extraction.
During FY 2024-25 (up to February 2025), approximately 3963 Lakh Kilo Liters (LKL) of treated mine water have been supplied to local communities around coal and lignite mining areas. Regular monitoring by accredited laboratories ensures the water meets necessary quality standards.
To maintain groundwater balance, rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge measures are also in place. PSUs continue to invest in mine water treatment infrastructure, including effluent treatment plants, water filtration units, and sedimentation tanks for effective water management.
Additionally, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) and Maharashtra State Power Generation Corporation Limited facilitates the supply of treated mine water from the Bhanegaon Open Cast Mine to Kapakheda Thermal Power Station, freeing up irrigation department resources for domestic and agricultural use.
